Quotables | Beyonce in Bow Down / I Been On

The capital Bey means 'I'm bout dat life'

She has become known for her privacy, and most of all her detachment. Beyoncé Giselle Knowles-Carter, or Beyoncé as she's known to most, is known for her music, performance and talent, not industry drama or public-personal life.

So when she dropped her "Bow Down / I Been On" track - which hasn't officially been announced as a single or a teaser though I personally lean towards the latter - of course we relished in the fact that after so much humility, the Queen had become a bit self-aware, recognizing that there was indeed a crown upon her head. That yes, the promo video that depicted her getting dressed up and walking out of those incredibly elaborately styled doors, brocade, court and all, had some sort of credibility to it.

But part of me can't help wonder: is it the right choice?

As a confessed stan, I love and appreciate Beyoncé and trust that she's, at the end of the day, going to come out with what's best but it begs to question, will she continue on in this vein? And if so, does it detract from the persona in that before, the reason that she was thought to be so regal, the fact that she was painted to be so aloof - and not in the negative sense - was because she in fact was. She didn't expressly shade other artists, and certainly not on a track. And most of all, she never referred to herself in a sort of pompous way.

I'm of the school of thought that she's only giving us what we want for the short term but come first single, Beyoncé is going to come back to us with the woman we've always known and loved: the performer, not the persona.

But trust that I will have Bow Down on rotation till then, respect that.
